SUSTAINABILITY IN DUBLIN In a time of increasing environmental concern globally, the Irish tourism sector is constantly striving to achieve more sustainable means of operating in order to safeguard both the booming industry as well as the environment. Dublin is proud of its sustainability achievements to date. For example, Dublin is home to the world’s first purpose-built, carbon neutral convention centre. Dublin is also proud of the fact that 100% of its congress and exhibition centres are third party certified for sustainability and 95% of hotel room stock is easily accessible (within 30 mins) by public transport to these exhibition centres. Dublin was launched on the Global Destination Sustainability Index which ranks destinations in terms of how sustainable they are as a business tourism destination. Only two years after entering the index, Dublin entered the Top 5 Most Improved Destinations. In light of the overall Irish collaboration towards sustainable tourism, Meet in Ireland was awarded overall with the title of Most Improved Destination. This was the first time that the award was ever given at a national level. We encompass the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as much as possible in our efforts. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. In order to support the industry in achieving sustainable goals, the Dublin Convention Bureau established an industry taskforce to address rising sustainability concerns and improve industry standards. The Dublin Convention Bureau also offers training events to industry partners in order to support them in providing clients with sustainable opportunities for their meetings and events. In order to ensure that clients can avail of environmentally proactive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes for delegates, the Convention Bureau has also partnered with a number of local charities who provide options such as beach cleaning and tree planting. Sustainable growth is not a destination but a journey. Therefore, the Dublin Convention Bureau, Meet in Ireland and Fáilte Ireland are committed to working closely with international delegates and local industry to keep reaching targets and pave the way for a greener Dublin. 13 SUSTAINABILITY IN DUBLIN
