The compelling history of the

buildings.

Tasteful integration of old and new

buildings with formal rear garden

Richmond Barracks, now one of Ireland’s Permanent Reminder 1916-2016 Projects. A unique

historical venue in Dublin 8, offering exhibitions and historical tours. Richmond Barracks

is a perfect venue to host a range of public and private events. The historic Gymnasium at

Richmond can accommodate up to 200 people and is ideal for conferences, receptions and

exhibitions. Visitors can relax in a beautiful and extensive garden to the rear of the buildings.

The buildings have significant connections to the 1916 Rising and the events that took place

in its aftermath.

• The Royal Irish Regiment which was based at Richmond Barracks was engaged in fighting

the Irish Volunteers led by Eamon Ceannt at the South Dublin Union during Easter Week.

• Following the rebels’ surrender, over 3,000 suspected rebels including 77 women were taken

and held at Richmond Barracks before being sent to prison camps in England and Wales.

• The leaders and more prominent persons were held in the gymnasium.

• The leaders were identified and their courts-martial took place in Richmond Barracks

before they were sent to Kilmainham Gaol for execution.
